Alumni Tracks: Jacob Turner '09

When Jacob Turner walked off Westminster’s baseball field for the last time in 2009, he wasn’t just closing a chapter — he was setting out on a journey towards a life focused on meaningful moments. As a standout high school pitcher, widely considered at the time to be one of the nation’s top arms, Turner’s journey from St. Louis phenom to professional athlete and now entrepreneur reflects not only a remarkable success story but a deeper understanding of how to live with purpose rather than just pursue accomplishments.

Two months after graduation, in an epic fulfillment of his childhood dream, Turner was selected 9th overall in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft by the Detroit Tigers.

“It made me grow up incredibly fast as an 18 year old,” says Turner. “Yet those experiences from 18-29 in pro sports helped me live what felt like several lifetimes in one. Those years taught me that there is beauty in the journey. Often in life, we are so focused on the next goal (or end destination) only to realize that the stories, memories, and things we will cherish most are in the moments that happen along the way.”

Turner broke into the Major Leagues in 2011 at age 20, showcasing the poise and talent that made him a top prospect. Over the course of an 11-year professional baseball career, he pitched for several MLB clubs, spent time internationally in the KBO (Korean Baseball Organization), and experienced both exhilarating highs and humbling challenges along the way. His career on the mound, marked by perseverance through transitions between teams and roles, offered Turner insights that would shape his professional life and his outlook on success, identity, and impact.

“It is easy to get caught up in the day-to-day of what we do,” Turner reflects. “Everyone wants the next big accomplishment, yet we can’t lose sight of our purpose on this Earth. We are here to impact those around us and be a light in a broken world. For me, my faith has always played a huge role in how I think about the things I am chasing, keeping them in perspective.”

Many people treat the New Year like a reset button and a time to set lofty resolutions. For Turner, that cycle of fleeting goals has never been his approach. Instead, he focuses on intentional habits and clarity of purpose, a mindset formulated early in his career and refined through the twists and turns of life.

“Rather than chasing the next achievement,” he says, “intentional living requires asking a simple but profound question: ‘What do you want each day to look like?’ and using the answer as a framework for living rather than drifting through life on autopilot.” Turner founded Moment Private Wealth alongside his brother, Luke ‘12, with this in mind. Every moment counts. The name itself captures the belief that life is a tapestry of moments that define who we become rather than just a series of milestones.

“My entire life has had one central theme: bet on yourself. From wanting to be a professional athlete as a kid to starting a business, I have had my fair share of people doubt me. When we started Moment we wanted it to be focused on clients who had done the same.”

Turner’s transition from professional pitcher to wealth advisor wasn’t accidental. While baseball was his primary passion, he always had a curiosity about how people make, spend, and invest money. More than that, he wanted to help others, specifically athletes and entrepreneurs, navigate the rare and unique opportunity that comes with sudden success and visibility.

At Moment, that purpose translates into helping clients clarify their values and align resources with long-term meaning, not just short-term wins. “Money is simply a tool,” Turner says. “Just like the best tool in your garage, if it isn’t used properly, it doesn’t do a lot of good.”

Reflecting on his time at WCA, Turner credits the supportive community and lifelong friendships for helping shape his character. Some of his earliest fond memories are from competing on the field with teammates who became brothers. These formative experiences, rooted in teamwork, discipline, and community, continue to influence him as he mentors clients and builds lasting relationships in business and life.

That same steady, intentional, and relational approach is exactly what clients say they experience at Moment Private Wealth. One Westminster family who’s known Jacob since high school put it this way: “What we respect most about Jacob is that he walks his talk. He manages our finances and leads his firm exactly as he preaches and promotes. No gimmicks, just straight talk and proven strategies. He takes our wealth management as seriously as he approached his baseball career: with discipline, commitment, and a passion to win. Since becoming his client, I’m a better business owner, husband, and father, and we’ve never felt more confident about our financial future.”

In a culture enamored with big goals and dramatic accomplishments, Jacob Turner’s story is a refreshing reminder that legacy isn’t built in a single season or monumental achievement, but in the daily, intentional choices made along the way. These habits produce not only financial stability but, more importantly, a life marked by impact, purpose, and meaningful moments worth remembering.
