Soccer - Sherman Nets TWO in Lady Wildcats Win!

Emily Sherman scored twice, including the game winner, as the Westminster Wildcats powered their way past the Principia Panthers in a 4-0 victory.

An improved Principia team had home field advantage under sunny skies and temps in the 70s. Before most of the fans had settled in to watch the game, the Wildcats got on the board. At 1:31, Westminster worked their first possession down field. Leah Beck collected the ball at the 18 and slid a pass cross field to Emily Sherman who was waiting on the left side. Emily turned with the ball and fired a quick worm burning shot that slipped through the surprised keepers hand and into the net. That would turn out to be the only goal the Wildcats would need. The Panthers first decent chance came at 16:52. After carrying the ball to the end line, what followed next was somewhat comical. The Panther players crossed the ball in front of the net 5 successive times forcing keeper Whitney Calvin to run post to post to follow the ball. Thankfully all that work resulted in nothing more than a shot that pushed wide of the net. After the ensuing goal kick, Westminster had a throw in near the Principia net. Kenzie Pfitzinger rocked the post on a one timer shot after the throw in at 18:40. Capitalizing on the pressure, the Wildcats scored again at 19:13. Emily collected her 2nd goal of the day when she picked up a rebound off a corner kick and sent it into the left corner to give Westminster a 2-0 lead. Offensively, the Wildcats moved the ball quite well until they got into the attacking third of the field where a solid Panther defense stifled most opportunities. Leah Beck took matters into her own feet when she dribbled through 3 Panther defenders and cut across the edge of the box. With everyone yelling “shoot the ball”, Leah pulled the trigger on a shot across her body and past the diving keeper into the right corner at 35:24 for a solid 3-0 lead going into half time.

Westminster began the 2nd half with keeper Julia Wiens standing in the frame. The Wildcats took the opening possession downfield and got off an immediate shot. After that, Principia came back and took control. Utilizing the short 10yd pass, the Panthers effectively worked the ball downfield where they hoped to find one of their speedy wingers open for the crossing pass. Christina Dohr, who continues to show steady improvement, and the rest of the Wildcat defenders efficiently took the last pass away which forced the Panthers into long shots outside the box. Keeper Wiens was attentive and in position to gather Principia’s attempts. Needing a goal of any kind, Principia brought their defenders up to the midfield stripe hoping to keep the ball contained in the attacking end. That strategy carries with it the risk of giving up a breakaway. At 31:28, that risk was realized as Danielle Zee-Cheng picked up the ball near midfield and carried it towards the goal with a lone defender banging on her shoulder. Danielle fought off the defender and the attacking keeper and put a high hard shot into the left corner for her 1st goal as a Varsity player and the last goal of the game.

The 4-0 victory means that Westminster will put their 5 game winning streak on the line this Wednesday as they play host to district rival Clayton at 4pm. The students and faculty have always made a great showing at the critical games of the season. The team hopes the students will come out in full force and cheer the surging Wildcats to victory.
