Spring 2008 Season

Soccer - Lady Wildcats Roll past Rams

Westminster traveled to MICDS and turned the rival Rams’ field into a soccer shooting gallery as they fired a season high 22 shots en route to a convincing 6-0 victory.

The Wildcats went on the attack early with the clear intention of avoiding the early deficits that had plagued them in the last games. While multiple early attempts by strikers and midfielders failed to find the frame, it was obvious that the Wildcats were prepared to shoot early and often. Lauren Probst was first to find the net. Kenzie Pfitzinger worked the ball downfield and fought off the grasps of a pesky defender. Lauren, coming to Kenzie’s aid, picked the ball off the defender and put it past the diving keeper at 6:18 for a 1-0 lead. A mere two minutes later, Ellie Moore increased the lead. Liz Crowell started the play when she carried the ball to the end line and sent a nice cross through the mouth of the goal where Ellie waited for the easy tap in at 8:16. Katie Haverstick was extremely effective as she utilized her speed to outrun the Ram’s defenders and put the ball in play. Unfortunately, her day was cut short as she was carted off the field after absorbing a late hit. Defensively, the Wildcats were effective in preventing any sustained pressure from MICDS. One of the few Rams opportunities came midway through the half when an attacker broke down the left side and had a clear line to the goal when defenders Tori Vanderheide and Christine Ehrmann came cross field and quelled the threat.

The 2nd half had Westminster going uphill into the wind but with no less determination. Leah Beck had the nicest goal of the day when she took a Rams clearing attempt and put a header on goal. The save from the header rebounded back to Leah where she one timed it into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead at 8:34. Emily Sherman, taking over for the injured Katie Haverstick, logged her first goal as a Varsity player at 10:21 when she carried the ball into the box and floated a shot over the outstretched arms of the keeper for a commanding 4-0 lead. At 13:13, Aly Tate’s super sweet cross into the box was collected by the diving MICDS keeper microseconds before a Wildcat attacker headed into the goal. The ensuing kick out from the keeper was collected by Liz breaking in from the right. Liz centered the ball to Lauren who patiently waited on the keeper’s reaction before she buried a shot into the left corner and a 5-0 lead at 13:42. Watson Woodward scored her 1st Varsity goal and the last of the day for Westminster at 37:21 when she gathered a misdirected MICDS clearing attempt and hit a shot behind the keeper and off the right post before going in the net for a final score of 6-0. The score would have been more lopsided had it not been for the efforts of the Ram’s keeper.

Westminster returns to the home field on Wednesday as they look to avenge last season’s disappointing playoff loss to archrival Visitation when they take on the Vivettes (what is that anyway??) at 4pm. The Lady Wildcats are looking to the students, faculty, and families to create a special and energetic atmosphere in a game that matches the #3 & #4 ranked teams in the Cats’ biggest contest of the season.
