Spring 2008 Season

Soccer - Lady Wildcats Come Back for Victory!!

Westminster overcame an early two goal deficit and got back in the win column as they beat the Villa Duchesne Saints 3-2 in front of a sell-out crowd at WCA.

Chilly temps and cloudy skies didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the Westminster parents, students, and faculty as the Lady Wildcats took the field for their first home game of the season. An early attempt for Westminster as the game got under way made it appear as though the team was ready to shake off the results of their last 2 games (both overtime losses). However, excitement quickly turned to concern when a defensive mistake put the opponent on the board. Villa had worked the ball deep into their attacking end. A Saints winger sent a long cross into the box. A Westminster defender attempting to clear, inadvertently put the ball right in front of the Wildcat net for an easy Villa tap in to give them a 1-0 lead at 2:43. Struggling to recover, Westminster had difficulty getting the ball out of their own end. Taking advantage of the seemingly disoriented defense, the Villa Saints continued to press. At 7:18 Villa capitalized on another defensive mistake when they picked up a poorly hit clearing attempt and punched it in for a 2-0 lead. Throughout the half, the Wildcats struggled to cross midfield and mount a sustained attack. It appeared as though this was not going to be a Wildcat day. However, a late goal put the Wildcats back in the game. At 37:02, Ellie Moore slammed the crossbar which led to a Westminster corner kick. Villa failed to clear the ball after the corner kick and the ball found its way to Leah Beck’s foot. Leah danced past a defender and centered the ball where Kenzie Pfitzinger pushed it past the Saints keeper at 37:49.

As the 2nd half got underway, the Saints continued to pressure the Wildcat defense with speedy wings and a brute force mentality. Withstanding the pressure, Westminster slowly but surely began to realize that attacking is a lot more fun than defending. An adjustment that put Tori Vanderheide into an attacking position began to pay dividends. Tori was very effective in stopping the Saints attack at midfield and then putting the ball into space for a Wildcat to gather up. Westminster tied the score at 2-2 when a play that started with a service from Christine Ehrmann to Ellie who took the ball off her chest and flicked it to Kenzie who put it in for her 2nd goal of the day at 23:40. Sensing a disturbance in the Force, Westminster kept the pressure up. At 27:10, a long throw-in from Christine found its way to a waiting Ellie Moore who buried the game winner into the net for a 3-2 lead. Credit goes to the Saints who didn’t give up as they switched to a more physical attack. Near the end of the match, Adrienne Boyd handled a bone rattling check from a Saints player who then put a hard spikes up tackle on Christine. Standing tall, the Lady Cats played hard till the official’s whistle signaled the end of the match and sealed the 3-2 victory.

The Wildcats’ next game is Friday 4/11 as they play a make-up match against Ritenour at 4:15pm at WCA. Your support was very helpful in today’s victory so we’re hopeful you’ll be back on Friday.
