Spring 2010 Season

DeRousse/Schlafly Doubles Team Takes State Championship!

Juniors Lauren DeRousse and Christine Schlafly played the best tennis they have ever played on Friday, October 23. The girls beat strong opponents along the way to secure Westminster’s first-ever state doubles title. DeRousse’s groundstrokes were gorgeous. Schlafly served perfectly. Both had superbly quick hands at the net. They were poised, graceful and confident in every round, and carried themselves like true champions. They represented our school (and consequently, the name of Christ) with dignity and honor.

Along the way, they had to challenge top teams from around the state: In the first round, they beat a formerly undefeated doubles team who had a record of 22-0. Then they played a flawless match against another powerhouse pairing from Pembroke Hill before defeating a John Burroughs team in the semi-finals. In the final, our girls went the distance in three close sets, defeating an incredible Visitation Academy team in what one respected spectator from another school called "the best high school match I've ever seen."

This was the best tennis our two girls have ever played together. It was “by far and away the best girls tennis I have ever witnessed from any players since I have been coaching,” said Coach Talley. “And as is true with all lovely and good things, this too was by the grace of the Lord."
