Wildcats finish long week with 5-0 shutout over Kennedy!!

Friday, the WCA Lady Wildcats traveled to Kennedy. The ‘Cats run-scoring machine was in idle for the first 5 innings as the Kennedy pitcher had them off balance. The ‘Cats were equal to the challenge. The Celts threatened early in the game as they put runners on base in each of the first 3 innings. The ‘Cats were able to stifle the Celts and strand their runners on the base paths. Shay Weststeyn put on a strikeout clinic as she struck out 15 batters, including 10 out of the last 13 batters to face her in the game. Shay ended up striking out every batter to face her at least once. In the 5th inning, the ‘Cats shifted their run-scoring machine out of idle, and into overdrive. Jocelyn Sheffield led off the 5th inning with a base hit. Hannah Worrell then followed with a long double to left field. Suzanne Weston drove both runners home with a base hit. Katie Haverstick followed with a single, then after Brynn Benes and Ellie Huffman were retired, Bryn McKie drove Suzanne in with a base hit. Katie later scored the 4th run in the inning on a wild pitch. The ‘Cats then added an insurance run in the 7th on a single by Hannah Worrell, a walk to Suzanne and Katie, and Hannah scoring on a wild pitch. The ‘Cats record now stands at 10-1! Over the past week, the ‘Cats won 6 games, two by shutout, and 2 others, only giving up 1 run. The stiffest competition yet for the ‘Cats looms next week, as the ‘Cats will take on St. Joseph’s and Ritenour, two teams whom the ‘Cats have not beaten before. Monday, the ‘Cats will travel to Ladue, on Tuesday will host St. Joseph, and Friday travel to Ritenour. Come on out next week and cheer this team on!

Wildcats Win Kennedy Round Robin Tournament!!!

Saturday, the WCA Lady Wildcats competed in the Kennedy Round Robin Tournament . The tournament was reduced to 2 games each and was played at WCA, after rain erased the Friday games.
In the first game the ‘Cats took on Fort Zumwalt North. Fort Zumwalt’s 2-8 record included 5 losses by 1 run, and 1 by 2 runs, and they proved to be solid competition. The ‘Cats and Fort Zumwalt traded zeroes on the scoreboard through 5 innings, as Shay Weststeyn and the ‘Cats worked hard on defense to keep Fort Zumwalt from scoring. Only 1 runner for Fort Zumwalt reached 3rd base, and only 2 others were able to get as far as 2nd base. In the 6th, the ‘Cats broke the tie with a lead-off single by Ellie Huffman, a brilliant sacrifice bunt by Bryn McKie, which she beat out for a hit, a fly ball to right field to advance Ellie Huffman, and a base hit from Jordan Klein. Shay struck out 10 batters as she picked up her 2nd straight shutout, and the ‘Cats played flawlessly in the field. In the second game, WCA took on Kennedy, in a re-match of last fall’s district title game. This time, the ‘Cats jumped out in the 1st inning for 2 runs, with Ellie Huffman starting the game with a single, advancing on Bryn McKie’s sacrifice bunt, which she again beat out for a hit. A single from Shay Weststeyn produced 1 run, and and Jocelyn Sheffield drove in the 2nd run with a sacrifice fly. The ‘Cats added a run in the 3rd on a base hit from Shay Weststeyn, and after a steal, scored on Jordan Klein’s base hit. The ‘Cats then demonstrated excellent defense, only allowing up a run in the 6th inning on an error, a ground out, and a sacrifice fly. Until that time, the ‘Cats had gone 17 innings without yielding a run!
The ‘Cats now take a 6-1 record, with 4 games scheduled for this week. Monday, the ‘Cats take on Lutheran St. Charles in a rain make-up game at WCA, Tuesday, the ‘Cats take on Fort Zumwalt West at WCA. Lady Wildcats Off to a Strong Start

Last year’s District winners, the WCA Lady Wildcats started off the season on Tuesday, with 8 new faces ready for action. 8 freshmen join the 5 returning juniors and sophomores to give the Lady ‘Cats a fresh look at a new season. The ‘Cats took on the Bears from Ursuline Academy and played very well, taking an early 3-0 into the bottom of the 3rd inning. Ursuline came back to tie in the bottom of the 3rd at 3-3. The score remained tied until an Ursuline home run over a short right field (did I say short?) fence gave the Bears a 4-3 lead, which they held to win 4-3. The Lady ‘Cats played well, with Shay Weststeyn recording 2 hits and striking out 5 batters. Freshmen Jocelyn Sheffield added a solid base hit to center for WCA’s other hit. Defensively, the Lady ‘Cats played well with no errors, and plenty of hustle! Today, the Lady ‘Cats will travel to Lutheran South. Next week Tuesday, the ‘Cats will play at home against Villa Duchesne. Plan to come out and see this exciting team!
