Wildcats Take On The Priory Rebels

The Wildcat Tennis team has posted two important wins lately. Last Friday, the team beat a formidable opponent: Duchesne, and although the match went until 7:30 PM, at the end of the day, it was a shut out. Nick Cascella led the way for the cats with a huge come from behind victory. And the rest of the team all exhibited skillful play in defeating their opponents. Just last night, the boys' tennis team had an impressive 6-1 win against district rival, Whitfield. The Wildcats were led by Jack Reed, Andy DeRousse, Andy Wiele who each won their singles matches. Doubles victories came from Quinn Zielonko/Jarred Caple, Michael Alexander/Jeff Glidewell, and Wes Powell/Taylor Hiemenz. If you have been waiting for an invitation to come watch the Cats in action. Tonight (4/21/04) is the night, as the team takes on Priory. It promises to be a fantastic match up, as the undefeated Wildcats take on what is quite possibly the toughest competition of the season.

Rebels Trip Wildcats In Hard Fought Match

The opponents were strong—real strong. Priory won the match 5-2, but the Wildcats played tough the whole time. Andy DeRousse put in a thoughtful and consistent performance at the three spot, and Andy Wiele executed an effective strategy and won convincingly at the four position.

Tennis Serves Up Another Victory

The match went over three hours, and they didn't get home until after 7:00 p.m., but at the end of the day, the boys varsity tennis team drove back to their houses with another victory. This time Vianny was the victim, falling prey to the Wildcats 5-2. Nick Cascella, Andy DeRousse, and Andy Wiele put in strong singles performances; while Jarred Caple and his doubles partner Colin McAfee pulled out a tough three set doubles match. Winning in straight sets for the team was the doubles team of Wes Powell and Taylor Hiemenz.

Turkey or Beef Hotdogs?

When the match was finished, the Wildcat tennis team enjoyed a 6-1 victory and then enjoyed some excellent hot dogs. The Oakville team was grilling to celebrate their last home match of the year, and our opponents offered us hot dogs, chips, and even some nicely decorated cupcakes. Thank you Oakville for your hospitality and sportsmanship. Nick Cascella, Andy DeRousse and Andy Wiele all pulled in singles victories. The doubles teams of Colin McAfee/Jarred Caple, Michael Alexander/Jeff Glidewell, and Wes Powell/Taylor Hiemenz also had convincing wins.

Wildcat Tennis Has the Cure

The Wildcat tennis team had an impressive showing against Lutheran South last night, winning the overall match 6-1. Posting singles wins for the cats were Nick Cascella, Andy DeRousse, and Andy Wiele. Colin McAfee/Jared Caple, Michael Alexander/Jeff Glidewell, and Taylor Hiemenz/Wes Powell all contributed doubles wins as well. Today, that Wildcats take on a very competitive Ladue team at Ladue. It promises to be a fantastic match, and if you've been itching to see competitive, engaging tennis, come on out today. If you've been itching in general, you might want to try hydrocortisone cream. Try to find one that also has soothing aloe.

Glidewell and Alexander Lead Wildcats In St. Dominic Showdown

The Wildcat tennis team defeated St. Dominic last night 6-1. Singles winners were Jack Reed, Andy Wiele, and Colin McAfee. Jeff Glidewell and Michael Alexander had a fantastic win at number one doubles, winning in a close three set match. Sam Hotchkiss and Quinn Zielonko won at number two doubles, and Wes Powell/Taylor Hiemenz rounded out the bottom of the line-up with a convincing win at three. Come out today for the Wildcats last home match of the season or come out tomorrow (the match is at Ladue tomorrow) to see the fellows take on Ladue. There is good tennis in the spring air and you really shouldn't miss it!

Tennis Team Advances

If you see these fellows in the hallway, give them a big congratulations and a pat on the back: Nick Cascella, Andy DeRousse, Andy Wiele, Jack Reed, Colin McAfee, and Jarred Caple. All of these tennis players have advanced through the first day of district play. Districts continue today at the West James Tennis Courts (see directions). All the Westminster's entrants still have the opportunity to become State qualifiers by tonight.

DISTRICT CHAMPS!

Pat cat on the back! The tennis team finished first in districts. Senior Nick Cascella led the cats by defending his district singles title against a tough opponent from St. Dominic in the finals. Cascella now advances to the state singles tournament to be held at the end of this month. Also qualifying for the state doubles tournament, finishing second in the district, are Andy Wiele and Jack Reed. Together, they played aggressively and impressively. Singles entrant Andy DeRousse and the doubles team of Jarred Caple/Colin McAfee both finished third in districts competition, fighting hard until the end and helping to earn the cats a team district championship. As champions, the team now advances to sectional play to be held next weekend. Depending on how the team finishes at sectionals, the entire Wildcat team could advance to the State team competition.

Wildcats Win Over MICDS

The varsity boys’ tennis team had an impressive showing at the MICDS invitational tournament. The Wildcats took on the host, MICDS, in the first round of play and came out on top with a 4-1 victory. Westminster winners included: Nick Cascella and Andy DeRousse in singles and doubles teams: Jack Reed/Andy Wiele and Colin McAfee/Jarred Caple. The boys then took on Kirkwood in the second round, and while they played competitively, lost 1-4. Jarred Caple and Colin McAfee picked up the only doubles win for Westminster in that round. This weekend, the team competes in Chillicothe, MO for sectional play. If you see a wildcat tennis player this week in class, please recognize that you are sitting next to greatness.

Wildcats Final-Four Bound!

After driving 4 hours to Chillicothe, Missouri, the Wildcat tennis team went to warm up for their first round sectional match, only to face a morning thunderstorm this past Saturday. The "Dopplar" assured them that the morning rain would pass, and when the clouds cleared, it was a lovely afternoon for tennis. The day held tears, laughter, hugs, shrugs, shouts of joy, tie-breakers, heartbreakers, and at the end of the day, the varsity tennis team had achieved a Westminster first. The entire team has qualified for the state tennis tournament's team event, to be held this coming Thursday in Springfield, Missouri. Go Wildcats!
