Westminster shoots down Oakville
In Round 3 of the Mehlville Cup Tournament at A-B Soccer Park on Thursday afternoon, the Westminster Wildcats completely dismantled the Oakville Tigers 3-0. The victory sends the Wildcats into the semifinals on Friday, when they will play the powerful Rockwood Summit Falcons at 6:00 PM at Oakville High School. Westminster finishes pool play with a 2-0-1 record in first place. Summit won its pool with a record of 3-0. Against Oakville, the Wildcats took charge from the opening minute and controlled the play throughout most of the game. Less than two minutes into the game center back Jake Grimes made a run through midfield, spotted forward Michael Evetts to his right, and delivered a nice pass to him. Evetts then blasted a rocket into the far post upper corner giving the Wildcats an early lead. Left back Jared Camp hit a high shot just two minutes later that the Oakville keeper was able to handle. In the ninth minute following a Westminster corner kick, midfielder Michael Shapleigh drilled a shot that the Oakville keeper tipped over the crossbar. Westminster continued to control the pace of the game. The Wildcats spread the field well and passed the ball effectively. They made good use of the wide backs Camp and Matt Hudnut to maintain possession. Oakville had one of its few chances in the 20th minute. They sent the ball down the left flank and lofted a dangerous cross into the Westminster box. Wildcat goalkeeper Sang-Jin Im came flying off of his line and leaped into the air and cleared the ball. Westminster nearly added to their lead in the 25th minute when midfielder Daniel Miller beat a defender and sent a nice through ball to freshman forward Connor Hunsicker on a diagonal run. Hunsicker ripped a shot just wide of the far post. Westminster continued pressuring the Oakville defense. Forward Jimmy Munson stole the ball from an Oakville player and won a corner kick for his efforts. On the ensuing corner the ball came out to Grimes whose shot was deflected off of the crossbar for another corner kick. In the final ten minutes of the half Oakville began controlling the play for the first time in the game. Sang-Jin was forced to play the ball a couple of different times. Oakville hit a corner in the 38th minute that Sang-Jin was able to punch clear of danger. The half ended with Westminster up 1-0. The Wildcats opened the second half in good shape. Early on Munson sent a ball through to Hunsicker whose shot was tipped over the bar for a corner. Oakville countered in the 48th minute with a free kick that was lofted into the box. Sang-Jin came off his line and collected the high ball with ease. In the 56th minute Grimes was carrying the ball through the midfield when an Oakville player took him down from behind. The Oakville player was shown a yellow card for the vicious tackle as Grimes was helped off the field. Grimes was able to return later in the match. A minute later the Wildcats added to their lead as the ball was sent down the left wing to junior Caleb Olson, who slid the ball into the box. Hunsicker gave a nice little back heel to a wide open Munson at the far post. Munson easily redirected the ball into the net for the goal. Olson and Hunsicker combined again in the 62nd minute. Olson came down the left wing again and sent the ball into Hunsicker who hit a one-timer into the back of the net. In the 66th minute Hudnut delivered a great corner to Brian Keffer, who had moved from his center back position into the midfield. Keffer’s header was blocked by the Oakville defense. Westminster continued to dominate the half. Senior back Alex Sagi worked a nice combination with Munson and Evetts. In the 78th minute senior Dima Weir earned a free kick with a nice hustling play. Hudnut lofted the free kick into the box to Shapleigh whose header went wide. Senior Brandon DeRousse earned another free kick a minute later. The final whistle sounded as Westminster prepared to take the kick.
