Cats tie in a wild shootout.
Last night's game was a rare game under the lights for the Wildcats.
They must have been excited by this chance because they played probably their best half of the season, dominating the first 40 minutes and taking a commanding 4 - 0 lead. With D1 recruiters in the house to watch Connor Hunsicker, he did not disappoint. In the 6th minute, WCA used a quick counter attack up the right flank to Jake Grimes to get the fireworks started. He quickly switched fields to Connor on the left side. Connor quickly crossed back to a flying Grimes whose shot sailed high over the Pkwy South net.
In the 7th minute, Grimes broke through again for a breakaway only to disappoint by hitting a high shot easily deflected by the Pkwy South keeper. One minute later, Grimes received the ball wide left, played a nice hard cross to Connor, who neatly stepped around the Pkwy South defender only to be taken down for a PK. Connor coolly placed the ensuing free kick low and right for a 1 - 0 goal. In the 18th minute, Hudnut found a streaking Abaum making a smart diagonal run behind the defenders. In with one defender to beat, and knowing recruiters were there to see Connor (Just kidding), Abaum creatively back heeled the ball to an on rushing Connor Hunsicker who had made a nice bending run to create a breakaway and WCA's second goal of the night. 2 - 0 WCA. Just two minutes later it was the Connor - Grimes show again. This time it was Connor leaking out wide left, receiving a nice high ball and putting it softly to the ground. Connor patiently worked to create space to cross, while the cagey Grimes worked to the middle. Connor crossed the ball and Grimes did the rest, heading the ball right to left past the diving Pkwy South goalie. 3 - 0 WCA. In the 31st minute, a Pkwy South defender foolishly tried to dribble past Jake Grimes. Grimes stole the ball at midfield, dribbled past two defenders and buried his shot in the back of the net. 4 - 0 WCA. In the 33 minute, Pkwy South stole the ball from a bad Tim Reed distribution pass out of the back. The shot taken just goes wide left and was Pkwy South's best chance of the half.
Well, as good as the first half was, things could not have gone worse in the second half. One minute in, Pkwy South striker made a nice bending run, only to split WCA's napping central defenders for a breakaway and a goal. 5 minutes later Pkwy South again broke through for another breakaway only to have Tim Reed come up with a nice save. 8 minutes in, a ball played in behind Jack Dohr, the on rushing winger gathered the ball, crossed it to a wide open Pkwy South forward, who headed the ball past a diving Tim Reed. What was looking like a blow out for WCA just became a game and Pkwy South knew it. In the 56th minute, after a failed corner kick, the ball was played to midfield where it was won by Matt Schwartz. Matt's quick pass was intercepted and the counter attack was on. Pkwy South did a nice job of quickly sending the ball diagonally right to left past a startled Jack Dohr for another breakaway goal. 4 - 3 WCA. Less than 5 minutes later, Pkwy South would flight a ball over Matt Schwartz, who unfortunately headed the ball backwards right onto the feet of the speedy Pkwy South forward, who hit a bomb over a stretched out Tim Reed. Fantastic goal, and now a tied game. At the 69 minute mark, a long throw from Hudnut, confusion in front with the ball dropping at Abaum's feet. Jacob hit the ball as hard a 130 lb. human can from 5 feet away. Unfortunately, it hit a Pkwy South player squarely in the chest and deflected out. One last long shot was knocked down by the Pkwy South goalie, with the rebound shot from Ethan sailing over the net. Tough break for the cats as the game would end in a tie.
The game was full of ups and downs and lots of action. Next game is Tues. vs Lafayette at 5 pm.
