Spring Season

Cats defeat Rams.

Todays game was a much anticipated matchup with the wildcats looking for a little payback for MICDS eliminating them from post season play in Districts last year. MICDS featured a young team, but proved to be a scrappy group. Early play favored MICDS with a long shot played high and wide at the 5 minute mark. Carson Pryor, MICDS central midfielder, hit another long range shot from 30 + yards that sailed
high over the net. He would prove to be MICDS' best player all day.
The first 15 minutes featured a lot of play down the left side with Matt Schwartz battling hard to silence the MICDS attack. At the 17 minute MICDS won the first of several corner kicks. The cross sent in was flicked past goalie Tim Reed, and then again from close range by another MICDS player. Curtis Stump saved the day by supporting Tim Reed and clearing the ball off the goal line at the last second.

20 minutes in, with Coach Legters on the Cats to settle down, the team did just that. Beck and Lillenberg checked in. After some nice calm possession in the midfield, Hudnut and Connor combined and the through ball put Connor in 1 v 1 with the goalie Logan Spence. A quick hard shot was turned away by the MICDS goalie. 30 minutes in, Connor Hunsicker continued to find space out wide. After slowing things down wisely, Connor smoothly sent a drop pass to Matt Schwartz for a cross to a closing Grimes. Grimes beat his man, and hit a left footed shot that Logan Spence was able to cover up. In the 37th minute, another cross from the right side by MICDS left Carson Pryor alone at the penalty spot with time to wind up. Fortunately for the Cats, He hit a rocket right at Tim Reed who made a very nice save to deny MICDS the lead.

Second half began with the Cats awake and fired up. The older, wiser Cats began to play smart, possession soccer. They slowed the game down in the midfield, played through their playmakers of Hudnut, Grimes and Hunsicker and took over the game. A bad back pass early in the half, led to quick breakaway for MICDS, with Stump intervening and fouling just outside the box. Ensuing shot to the right side low, was saved by Tim Reed. 48 minutes in, Matt Baldwin made a nice run down the right side. His cross found John Hunsicker all alone, who made one quick touch and pounded the shot. The keeper never moved, but the dreaded goal post was there to save the day for MICDS. Obviously, we need some new posts put in this year. At the 50 minute mark, a foul was called on MICDS at the 25 yard spot. Grimes touch the ball square to open up space around the wall and Matt Hudnut used his exquisite technique to drive the ball low and past Logan Spence, who never moved. WCA 1 - MICDS 0.

55 min, Grimes attacked down the right side to Connor on the left, Connor quickly found Hudnut through the middle, and Hudnut played a nice quick chip over the goalie and just over the goal. Cats were on the attack and the three Amigos of Grimes, Hunsicker and Hudnut were making the MICDS players look like cones on the field. Great combinations and creative runs led to many more chances, but the score remained a dangerous 1 - 0. 71 minutes in, MICDS had a great chance to score, with their captain in the penalty box. He beat one defender and instead of taking the quality shot, attempted to beat Tim Miller. Bad idea, with great defending by Tim to knock the ball away and keep the clean sheet for his defense.

Game was back and forth and the Cats could have broken the spirit of the MICDS players if they would have put a couple more away. Instead, the end was a game of clearances by the Cats defense and MICDS struggling to create anything. Game ended 1 - 0. Great performance by Tim Reed, Tim Miller, Curtis Stump, Matt Schwartz and especially Jack Dohr to keep the shutout. Next up is a game Thursday versus one the areas best teams - St. Marys. Please come out and support your Wildcats team.
