Season Ends in Springfield

Another great trip to Springfield for the Wildcats: Cheddars, Fuddruckers, Weezer, and there was even a little tennis played too. Saturday was another hot day under the sun - and in morning action, Jimmy Myers ended his great career, losing to MICDS but still finishing 7th or 8th at the state tournament. Timmy Miller and John Hunsicker had the exact same finish, losing to a TOUGH Westminster doubles team. That's right, Cameron Smith and Nick O'Neal beat Miller/Hunsicker in the morning, but only after a tough 3 set battle. Smith and O'Neal went on to lose their next round but finished 6th in the state and earned a place on the podium.

The Only Bad Service Comes At Mexican Restaurant

Update for day 2 of the state tournament: Friday began the individual portion - and our entrants have once again made school history by having all of our 3 qualifiers still playing on what will be the final day of the tourney (Saturday). Jimmy Myers in singles, Nick O'Neal/Cameron Smith in doubles, and John Hunsicker/Timmy Miller in doubles. For another school history moment, tomorrow's morning doubles match will actually feature WCA vs. WCA at state! And the winner of that doubles match will be guaranteed a spot on the state platform (top 6). It's a great time to root for Westminster. Jimmy Myers will also have a morning match against a tough MICDS player. Overall, the team has played great tennis over the last two days. And in spite of a steamy and pokey Mexican Cantina, the trip has been amazing! Actually, even that was fun.

They Played Like Champions

Our young men left it all out on the court yesterday for 4 1/2 hours in some seriously hot weather. It started with doubles at 9:00 AM when the team played what would become the eventual state champions, Pembroke Hill out of Kansas City. Jimmy Myers and Chris "Greezy" Griesedieck came out of the gate strong with a smart game plan and won the match in straight sets at #1 doubles. Part of the beauty of this achievement is that one of the opponents on the other side of the net is a top player in the whole state and is one of the favorites to win the individual singles state tournament this year. But with Myers powerful placement and Greezy's controlled groundies, the Wildcats proved to be too much. And in a #2 match that went the distance, Cameron Smith and Nick O'Neal played gutsy tennis, eventually winning in 3 close sets. The pair had some phenomenal shot-making along the way from Cameron's hard flat forehand, and Nick's incomparable hands at the net. At #3, John Hunsicker and Timmy Miller came out firing and shell-shocked their opponents in the first set, capturing it 6-0. Momentum shifted in the 2nd set, and yet our boys played tough tennis to hang close, and even found themselves with a match point in the 2nd set. After dropping the 2nd in a tiebreaker, the pair also dropped the 3rd set, but along the way, they played with confidence, poise, grace, and intelligence. Then the team went into singles action and would need 3 of the 6 matches in order to capture the match and secure a spot in the semi-finals. Myers was outplayed at #1 singles, and Stephen Lillenberg fought well but eventually fell in the #2 singles match; and he also fell with an ankle injury near the end - but he kept fighting, admirably. Cameron Smith dug deep at #3 and brought his usual fiery passion and well-rounded game in full force, winning the match in 3 sets. Smith was the only Westminster player who would not drop a match during the entire day, once again showing his excellent resolve and mental strength. Chris Griesedieck did not get to finish his singles (at #4) match because the overall match was completed - but he was fighting well in the decisive 3rd set when things ended. Timmy Miller put in a valiant effort at #5 singles, using his presence at the net to put pressure on his opponent, eventually splitting sets against a very strong opponent - but falling in the 3rd set. And Nick O'Neal had an excellent start to his match, winning his first set with a combination of attack from both the baseline and the net. In the 2nd set, his opponent started playing at a higher level and forced the match into a tiebreaker which Nick could not fight his way out of. O'Neal would go on to lose the 3rd but left what he had on the court well. All the boys did.
