DeRousse and Schlafly are State Champs!

THE FIRST WESTMINSTER STATE TENNIS CHAMPS! If you were there, you know how jaw-droppingly special it was. Lauren DeRousse and Christine Schlafly played the best tennis they have ever played, beating incredibly strong opponents along the way to secure the state doubles title. Lauren's groundstrokes were gorgeous - Christine served perfectly. Both had superbly quick hands at the net. They were poised, graceful and confident in every round, carrying themselves like true Champions and representing our school (and consequently, the name of Christ) with dignity and honor. Along the way, they had to take out top teams from around the state. 1st round, they beat a formerly undefeated doubles team who had a record of 22-0. Then they played a flawless match against another powerhouse pairing from Pembroke Hill before defeating a John Burroughs team in the semi-finals. In the final, our girls went the distance in 3 close sets, defeating an incredible Visitation team in what one respected spectator (from another school) called: "The best high school match I've ever seen."

Wiele, Montgomery, and Segrave Wrap Up Careers

After helping the team advance to Sectionals, Jordan Montgomery, Amanda Wiele, and Ashley Segrave completed their Westminster tennis careers Saturday morning. Competing against a tough Kirksville High School team, the girls all fought well; Jordan Montgomery was even battling a nagging illness. Ashley Segrave split sets in a hard fought comeback effort. And Amanda had just begun clawing her way back into the match before defeat. Overall, the Wildcats walked away with only 1 win which came at the #1 doubles position. Lauren and Christine had a tough one, winning 7-5, 0-6, 7-6.

Sectionals!

For the first time (at least since coach Talley has been coaching), the girls tennis team qualified for Sectional play. Our girls beat St. Dominic, 5-0 in Team Districts and will now move on to play Saturday morning, most likely at MICDS. They will play a 9:00 AM match, likely competing against Kirksville High School – and should they win, they would play again at 1:00 PM again, this time most likely against MICDS.

State!

State! Lauren and Christine qualified for the state tournament with a 2nd place finish in the district. They played strong tennis in the final, going the distance in 3 sets before losing to a tough MICDS team. Meg Betz also had a great finish with strong play, finishing 4th in the district singles draw. And even though she felt a bit sick, she walked off the court her with trademark smile. The whole team has now qualified for Team Districts with high hopes to advance to Sectionals. Next match will be against St. Dominic on Tuesday.

Good Better Betz and the Amazing Juniors

Lauren and Christine advanced in the District doubles draw by promptly winning their quarterfinal match 6-1, 6-1. They now play MICDS in the semi-final match at MICDS on Wednesday at 3:00 PM sharp. Meg Betz will have the same start time for her semi-final singles match against the #1 seed from MICDS. Betz overcame a tough opponent in her quarterfinal match, winning 6-4, 6-0 with steady and smart play that emphasized placement over power.
