Lady Wildcats fall to Kennedy in District final
The Lady Wildcats softball season ended abruptly at home Monday with a 1-0 loss to Kennedy in the District final. Great pitching dominated the game, as Kennedy managed to piece together 2 singles around a sacrifice bunt to push across the only run of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning. The Lady Cats finish the season with a fine 14-6 record. The Cats won their first 8 games of the season, and played strong against tough opposition. Seniors Shay Weststeyn, Suzanne Weston, and Katie Haverstick finish their WCA careers having led the softball program to new heights, going from a 5-12 record in their freshmen year, to winning 30 games over these last 2 years. The Cats won back to back District titles, and have given the other team members some lofty goals to shoot for. Overall, the Cats demonstrated improved hitting, with 6 Cats hitting above .300 (Jocelyn Sheffield - .421, Shay Weststeyn - .410, Ellie Huffman - .375, Bryn McKie - .365, Katie Matheny - .311, Hannah Worrell - .309), 6 Cats scoring more than 15 runs (Ellie Huffman 21, Bryn McKie 19, Suzanne Weston 18, Jocelyn Sheffield 16, Shay Weststeyn 16, Hannah Worrell 16), and 3 Cats driving in 17 runs (Jocyeln Sheffield, Shay Weststeyn, and Ellie Huffman). Shay Weststeyn closes out a fine pitching career at Westminster, striking out 686 batters in 436 innings pitched, for a 11.01 strikeout per game average, and a 4 year cumulative ERA of 1.24! Shay's ERA over the past 2 years was a microscopic 0.85! Way to go Cats!!!
Lady Wildcats reach District Finals!
The Lady Wildcats advanced to the District Finals with a 14-4 victory over Villa Duchesne on Saturday. Villa struck first with 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning, but the Cats came right back with 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st and 8 in the bottom of the 2nd, and never looked back. The Cats pounded out 13 hits, with Jocelyn Sheffield (3 for 4 – 3 RBIs, Home Run!), Shay Weststeyn (2 for 2 – 3 runs scored), Hannah Worrell (2 for 3 – 3 RBIs), and Ellie Huffman (2 for 4 – 3 RBIs), leading the Cat attack. Suzanne Weston (2 for 4), and Bryn McKie (2 for 3 – 2 RBIs), rounded out the attack. Jocelyn Sheffield led off the 8 run 2nd inning with a home run to left center, and the Cats batted around sending 14 batters to the plate in the inning. The Cats closed out the scoring in the bottom of the 5th, adding a single run. Shay Weststeyn recorded the win, striking out 10 batters. The Cats will go after their 3rd straight District Championship on Monday, facing a tough Kennedy team, for the 3rd year in a row in the District final. Last year the Cats edged the Celts by a score of 1-0, in a brilliant pitching duel. This year looks to be every bit as good as last year. Come on out watch this exciting District final game.
Wildcats win first game in Districts 17-2!
The Lady Wildcats won their first game in the Districts on Wednesday, by a score of 17-2 over Soldan. The Cats held the upper hand early scoring 6 runs in the first inning,and added 5 runs in the 2nd, and 6 more in the 3rd inning, to wrap up the victory. Hannah Worrell picked up the win, pitching the first 2 innings and striking out 4 batters. The Cats had 4 players score 3 runs each, Ellie Huffman, Suzanne Weston, Shay Weststeyn, and Hannah Worrell. The Cats play Villa Duchesne at WCA on Thursday. Villa was a 13-2 winner over Visitation on Wednesday.
Lady Wildcats chalk up 12 win over Visitation 13-0!
The Lady Wildcats recorded their 12th win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Visitation by a score of 13-0. 16 Wildcats got into the game as the Cats recorded 11 hits and picked up 8 walks. The 'Cats struck early, pushing 5 runs across in the 1st inning. The 'Cats then picked up 5 more runs in the 3rd inning, and 3 in the 5th to round out the scoring. The 'Cats had a balanced attack throughout the lineup, with Katie Matheny and Shay Weststeyn picking up 2 hits apiece, and Shay, Katie Matheny, Bryn Benes, and Summer Smith, each picking up 2 RBIs. Shay and Hannah Worrell, combined for a no hitter, as they shutout Visitation, striking out 10 batters total. The 'Cats play at O'Fallon Christian on Monday, which will be played as a JV game make-up from Thursday. On Tuesday, the Cats host Nerinx Hall. Then on next Thursday, October 8, the districts start. The Cats are hosting the districts, so come on out and cheer the Cats on!!
Lady Wildcats score 11 to pick up 11th victory!
The Lady Wildcats broke loose in a big way Monday afternoon, gaining their 11th win of the season 11-1 over Notre Dame. The 'Cats put together good solid hitting, excellent pitching, and good solid defense, as they raised their season record to 11-4. The 'Cats got the long ball from Hannah Worrell and Ellie Huffman, as Hannah connected for a solo home run in the 3rd inning, and Ellie connected for 2 home runs, a solo home run in the 5th inning and a grand slam in the 6th inning! Ellie Huffman led the hitting attack with 3 hits, 3 runs scored and 5 RBIs! Hannah Worrell, Suzanne Weston, and Bryn McKie also had 2 hits each. Katie Matheny also knocked in 2 runs. Shay Weststeyn pitched another fine game, with only 1 unearned scoring on 3 hits and 10 strikeouts. The 'Cats travel to Visitation on Wednesday, then to Christian High in O'Fallon, on Thursday.
