At Least The 3rd Best Team In Missouri
The boys went to Fulton, Missouri for Sectional play. They quickly defeated the host team (Fulton High School) 5-0 in the morning; and then @ 1:00 PM, the Wildcats took on MICDS. The boys played well and gave MICDS great matches on every court. While Gregory Schoenberg and Nick O'Neal had a very close doubles match that went 3 sets, Brian Keffer was the only one who pulled out a win (at the #2 singles spot). He beat Charlie Curtis, a MICDS standout who had gone undefeated all season (as a singles player). Brian put an end to that streak in what would be Keffer's last high school match (an impressive way to go out).
Team Districts
The boys' season continues! Yesterday, the fellows defeated Priory 5-1 (and it would have been 6-1, if we had let Nick O'Neal play his match point). A special note: Jimmy Myers returned to the court after his long time on the bench due to a back injury; and the team was glad to have him back and watch him win easily in straigh sets. Hunsicker and DeRousse pulled out their #1 doubles match in 3 sets. Keffer Munson got theirs in straight sets. Hunsicker and Keffer also secured straight set singles wins with solid play all the way around.
Districts
Most the team fell in the quarterfinals held @ MICDS, but Joe Hunsicker advanced to the semis where he had a gut-wrenching 3 hour battle against Whitfield's Michael Gardner. Though Joe made a great comeback, fighting off several match points along the way, he couldn't quite pull it out, losing 4-6 in the 3rd set. Then Joe had to go out and play for 3rd place which he won nobly, and even though he did not qualify for state, he once again showed why he is one of the classiest tennis players on planet earth. Poised. Honest. Compassionate. Humble. Unassuming. Dedicated. Talented. The team thinks it's quite an honor to march into battle with Joe as their #1 representative.
Regular Season Ends With Win Against Chaminade
Today capped off the regular season of play. The Wildcats defeated Chaminade 6-3, in a hard fought battle. Brian Keffer and Jimmy Munson brought home straight set singles wins, and they also paired up together to bring home a doubles victory! Gregory Schoenberg and Brandon DeRousse dominated their doubles match...as did Seth Lillenberg/Nick O'Neal and Matt Reilly/Timmy Miller. Great combinations with great tennis. Jimmy Myers fought hard and came out with an amazing first set, and then his nagging back injury flared up. He still fought courageously, eventually losing in a 3rd set tiebreaker. But his determination, excellence, and commitment exemplify well what this team was all about when it came to competition. Fighters who are also gentlemen. Classy.
JV Comes Through for Varsity Result
On the tennis courts, JV bailed out Varsity @ Principia. Due to the strength of our JV team, Coach Talley recruited 6 JV players to fill in the doubles spots for an official Varsity match. Of the Varsity players involved in the match, only Timmy Miller won (@ #4 singles) - he played smart, controlled tennis. At the other 3 singles spots, our Varsity players ended up losing, each player in 3 sets. So the match came down to the doubles courts, where the JV guys picked up the slack. Those teams were Robert Thompson/Caleb Olsen, Connor Zielonko/Stephen Lillenberg, and Johnny Kehr/Tom Winter. Great job guys!
History
It was the first time we ever won against SLUH; and not just that, it was a shutout! 7-0. Joe Hunsicker dropped only 1 game on his way to victory. Keffer, Munson, and Nick O'Neal followed suit with straight set wins as well. It was good to have Gregory Schoenberg back on the courts where it looked like he had not lost a beat; he teamed with Brandon DeRousse (who is playing fantastic doubles) to win @ #1 doubles. The TALL pairing of Timmy Miller and Seth Lillenberg picked up a win @ #2. And Matt Reilly (an actual serve and volleyer) teamed with Cameron Smith to bring home the #3 spot. The boys will finish up their regular season on Wednesday against Chaminade. That should be a tremendous match-up!
SLUH Varsity Tennis match is at Dwight Davis Tennis Club
Today's match 4/28 vs SLUH is to be played at DWIGHT DAVIS TENNIS CLUB.
Tournament of Champions
It was the first time our school has ever been invited to play this very selective tournament. The goal of the tournament is to bring 8 of the very best teams together from all over the state and have them compete. Schools came from Kansas City, Joplin, and Columbia; there were also several St. Louis schools invited; each brought 2 singles players and 2 doubles teams. And overall (though newbies), Westminster players held their own! Joe Hunsicker had the best result, finishing #8 out of a field of 16 (remember, these are the best players out there from both big and small schools). Brian Keffer finished JUST behind Joe @ #9, beating strong players from Rockhurst and Rockbridge along the way. Jimmy Munson and Brandon DeRousse paired up to finish 11th out of the field of 16 doubles teams - while Seth Lillenberg and Nick O'Neal finished 13th. Overall, it was a great tournament and a fantastic first experience in it. The team hopes to be invited back in the future.
Brothers, Cookout, & a Great Team Cheer
It looked like it might be a rainout; in fact, we even had to get the leaf blower out to dry off the courts for the match. But the LORD gave the sunshine, and the match was on! With a cookout going on in the background, the JV and Varsity teamed together again to pull in a 7-0 win against Lutheran South. Brian Keffer stepped up into the shoes of #1 singles - and Jimmy Munson moved to #2. Johnny Kehr played #3, and Connor Zeilonko @ #4. And all those singles players brought home straight set wins. Then the Hunsicker boys (Joe and John) teamed up to win @ #1 doubles, and the Lillenbergs (Stephen and Seth) paired to win @ #2. And though not related by blood, brothers Caleb Olsen and Robert Thompson paired to win easily @ #3. A fun day in the sun. Pick any one syllable word and yell it when I say three: One...Two...Three...________ (what did you fill in the blank with?)
JV represents Varsity @ Lutheran North
Though the top 3 singles spots were Varsity players (Cameron Smith @ #1, Timmy Miller @ #2, and John Hunsicker @ #3), the rest of the Varsity line-up was full of strong JV players! And together, the Wilcats brought home a 7-0 win. See the JV link for an update on the details of that match (who played in what positions that day).
Please note SOME JV players will be having a match today 4/24
Some JV players will be having a match vs. Lutheran South here at WCA today 4/24. The weather however looks questionable, so please check for updates.
Wildcats Defeat Ladue as D-Con Returns
David Conley was in the post-game huddle yesterday when our team soundly defeated Ladue 6-1. Between our top 3 singles players (Joe Hunsicker, Keffer, and Munson), we only gave up 4 games total! Nick O'Neal fought hard to win a first set tiebreaker and then cruised through the second set. DeRousse/Lillenberg (@ #1) and Smith/Reilly (@ #2) both won in straight sets with strong, clean play.
"TEAM!"
A true team effort resulted in a great win against a strong Clayton team. Even without Gregory Schoenberg and Jimmy Myers in the line-up yesterday, the boys stepped up big winning 6-1. Brian Keffer and Jimmy Munson stroked and moved as well as they have all season, winning @ #2 and 3 singles respectively. Nick O’Neal won @ #4 singles as he set up points nicely at the net. Brandon DeRousse and Seth Lillenberg employed quick hands, strong serving and imposing net play for a straight set #1 doubles win. While @ #2 doubles, Timmy Miller and Matt Reilly wanted to find out just how clutch they really were yesterday, letting things get really close before they closed out in the 3rd set. And John Hunsicker and Cameron Smith teamed together to give a solid straight set win @ #3 doubles. Great weather. Great match. Great season so far.
Please note an addition to the schedule on 4/29 vs Principia
Varsity will play at Principia and JV will play at WCA.
Tennis Past Midnight in Belleville
The Belleville East Tournament only featured the doubles portion due to rain and a cancelled singles draw. While we had many dedicated and amazing fans there (parents, of course), the prize has to go to Mark DeRousse who watched his son Brandon pair with Joe Hunsicker to win the backdraw - and then, even though the match ended at 1:00 AM, Mark immediately drove his family on a 3 hour trip to Murray State. Woah! Congratulations to Joe and Brandon who stuck it out into the wee hours of the morning with some great tennis along the way.
1-2-3 L'il Honey!
The team wins again (5-2) as Hunsicker the Younger (AKA: John) had his varsity singles debut against Whitfield. He played #4. Jimmy Munson also picked up a singles win @ #3. Gregory Schoenberg paired with Brandon DeRousse for a quick straight set win. Cameron Smith/Nick O'Neal also coasted to a win at #2 doubles; and Timmy Miller/Matt Reilly also won without incident.
1-2-3 Nick!
The tennis cheer is often just the name of our #4 singles player (a long tradition). Nick O'Neal was #4 singles yesterday and walked away with just one of our 7 wins. A shutout does not mean that much unless your opponent is strong, and that's why the victory against John Burroughs is quite significant. Joe Hunsicker, Brian Keffer, Jimmy Munson, and Nick O'Neal all picked up singles wins. Our doubles pairings of Jimmy Myers/Gregory Schoenberg, Brandon DeRousse/Seth Lillenberg, and Matt Reilly/Cameron Smith won their matches in straight sets. Jimmy Myers agitated a back injury pretty badly and will sit out the rest of the matches this week - when you have a moment, please pray for His recovery.
Please note the date change on the Burroughs match for Var and JV.
The V and JV Burroughs matches are now on Monday 4/14.
ABC...easy as 1-2-3
In the ABC tournament, all of our boys finished in the top 3 for their respective flights. Almost everyone on our team finished 2nd, but we did have some first place finishes: Cameron Smith won his #7 singles flight, and Brandon DeRousse/Seth Lillenberg paired together to win their #4 doubles flight.
Wildcat vs. Ram (who wins?)
The Wildcats fought hard against a very strong MICDS team and when the dust settled, both teams had won 4 matches. MICDS won at the top spots, but the back end of our line-up was so solid. Jimmy Myers played the match of his young life so far, winning at the #4 singles spot in a 3rd set tiebreaker. Cameron Smith also stayed focused to win his singles match in the 3rd set. And our back two doubles played strong and imposing tennis: Brandon DeRousse and Seth Lillenberg are unstoppable, and Timmy Miller and Matt Reilly are playing smart, consistent doubles together. Reilly put an overhead away for match point, and the team continues to play well.
Clayton matches rescheduled.
Reschedule date of 4/21 for both V and JV.
Today's 4/3 V and JV Tennis matches have been canceled.
Please check back for possible reschedule date.
Schoenberg Has the Shot of the Day
He must have been 20 feet away when he sunk a shot right into the hopper. That might not sound impressive, but you should have seen the angle. Man, that guy is good. The tennis was good today as well. A shut out (7-0) against Parkway North. Brian Keffer stepped up into the #1 singles role today and won without dropping a game! Jimmy Munson, Nick O'Neal, and Seth Lillenberg also slid up higher in the line-up and came away with wins. In doubles action, Gregory Schoenberg/Brandon DeRousse, Matt Reilly/Timmy Miller, and John Hunsicker/Cameron Smith all cruised along to straight set victories.
A Birthday Present For Nick O'Neal
The last time our boys were on Priory's tennis courts, they experienced quite a difficult loss. But this time, things were different. The Wildcats brought home a convincing 6-1 win. Joe Hunsicker, Brian Keffer, and Jimmy Myers brought home solid straight set victories - While the doubles pairings of Gregory Schoenberg/Nick O'Neal, Brandon DeRousse/Seth Lillenberg, and Timmy Miller/Cameron Smith also picked up wins. Happy Birthday to Nick, and thanks for sharing that cake! Delicious.
JV and V games today 3/31 have been canceled.
please check back for rescedule date.
Tennis March Madness Begins (with shutout)
11-0. The Varsity season had a strong start with convincing wins all the way around. Joe Hunsicker, Brian Keffer, Jimmy Munson, Gregory Schoenberg, Jimmy Myers, and Nick O'Neal all had no troubles in their singles matches. Those top 6 also played good doubles to continue the shut out - Other quality doubles play came from Timmy Miller, Seth Lillenberg, Brandon DeRousse, and Cameron Smith.
