Fall 2008 Season

Ouch! Westminster Suffers Painful Loss to Nerinx

The Wildcats traveled to Nerinx Hall and suffered their most difficult and lopsided loss to the #4 ranked large school soccer team by the score of 6-0.

Taking the field against the high powered Markers, the Wildcats knew the day would bring their most difficult task of the season so far. Regardless, it was hoped that the team would display a “bring it on” attitude. However, as play got underway, the Wildcats seemed almost star struck as Nerinx moved the ball effortlessly through all 3 lines. Taking a defensive stance, Westminster worked to funnel the ball to the outside lanes in an effort to keep the Nerinx attack as far away from the net as possible. The tactic was effective for a while but Nerinx found a way to overcome. At 8:37, Nerinx scored their first as an attacker sliced across 2 defenders to find herself all alone in front of the goal where her soft shot found the net for a 1-0 score. Wasting little time, Nerinx tallied another at 14:27 off a corner kick that once again resulted with an attacker in front of the net with the ball and an easy shot for a 2-0 lead. Westminster struggled to cross midfield as the Markers’ 4 defensive backs easily collected all long serves and sent them back into the attacking end of Nerinx. The Markers logged their 3rd and final goal of the half at 35:07 when they found themselves in front of the net again for an easy shot and goal.

The 2nd half began with Westminster hoping to get back into the game with an early goal. What they did not need was another goal by Nerinx to deepen the hole they were already in. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened at 7:50 when a midfielder broke in on the left side and let her shot go into the far corner for a 4-0 lead. Just under 4 minutes later, they scored again on a long serve from the left side that keeper Julia Wiens punched away. The ball landed in a scrum in the middle of the box where a Nerinx player punched it in for a 5-0 lead. Nerinx scored their 6th and final goal of the game at 19:18 when a Marker attacker carried the ball down the right side and hit a high hard shot over the keeper’s hands.

Westminster had difficulty getting anything accomplished offensively. The Wildcat highlight of the game came on the defensive end. At 3:02 of the 2nd half, a Nerinx attacker broke in all alone. As she carried the ball in, keeper Julia Wiens came out of the net to challenge her. As the attacker closed in, Julia came out and slid in front of the player and ripped the ball off her feet. Julia had come in at the beginning of the 2nd half and played admirably as she stopped 5 of 8 shots.

The Wildcats close out their regular season at Westminster on Thursday at 4pm as they take on Lutheran South. With this being the final home game of the season, the team will honor the departing seniors in a pre-game ceremony. Please stay after school and show your appreciation for the seniors and to cheer the team to victory.

Game Stats: Saves: Calvin (4), Wiens (5)
