Fall 2008 Season
Lady Wildcats shutout Burroughs in first soccer game of season
The 2008 Varsity Women’s soccer season is finally underway! The lady Cats opened the season with an impressive 2-0 victory over the John Burroughs Bombers. Under sunny skies and temps in the 40’s, Westminster opened the season with many new faces and a desire to better last season’s run in the state playoffs.
Play got under way with Westminster gaining early control. With sharp passing and well timed runs, it was difficult to tell that the team had only 4 outdoor practices under their belt. Midfielders Ellie Moore and Leah Beck worked well together as they controlled the flow and direction of play. At 12:34, newcomer Lauren Probst got the cold crowd excited early when she broke in for a partial breakaway. Flanked by 2 defenders, Lauren purposely dropped a high shot in front of the Burroughs keeper only to have it bounce off the crossbar. A mere minute and a half later Lauren had another opportunity bang off the right post. At 18:24, senior captain Ellie Moore earned the 1st goal of the season. Breaking down the middle of the field, Ellie took a nice feed from Lauren and put a leftie into the right corner from 25 yards. Junior Leah Beck found the crossbar on a header from a corner kick at 28:00. The half closed out with the Westminster defense allowing no shots. Bombers sensation Maggie Kistner was held completely ineffective as Leah took her shadowing assignment seriously.
The 2nd half got under way with Westminster going on the immediate attack. Junior Kenzie Pfitzinger took a nice pass from Leah and found net at 2:00 to give the Cats a commanding 2-0 lead. Kenzie tried to add to the lead at 19:02 when she broke in on the left side only to have the attacking keeper push her shot wide of the net. Seeing that the game clock was ticking away, Burroughs went on the attack. Working the ball through the middle, all attempts to find the high scoring Kistner were stifled by the ever present Leah. Returning defenders Christine Ehrmann and Tori Vanderheide with the aid of newcomers Katie Haverstick and Haley Bettlach were solid as they held off the Burroughs 20 minute attack by allowing only 1 shot. Thankfully, the game came to a close right before dark enveloped the field. Westminster’s 2-0 victory against a solid Burroughs team was a great way to start the season!
The Wildcats continue their season on Wednesday as they travel to play Lutheran North at 4:00pm. We hope you’ll leave school and follow the team bus to cheer the ladies to victory.
