Varsity Baseball team starts season in Florida Tournament
The varsity baseball team played in the 12-team Westminster National Baseball Classic in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida over Spring Break and took home a 3rd place trophy.
In the first game the Cats clobbered Miramar, Florida by a score of 10 – 0 in 5 innings. David Mueller led off the game with a home run. The Cats added three runs in the 2nd on hits by Michael Christianson, Michael Bianca, David Roig, a walk to David Mueller, and a sacrifice fly by Tye Malone. A single by Derrick Phillips, a double by Justin Weststeyn, and a suicide squeeze by Christianson plated two more runs in the 3rd inning to make the score 6 – 0. The Cats added 4 more runs in the 5th inning to complete the rout. Michael Ferrara pitched 3 innings and Jacob Worrell 2 innings as they combined for the 3-hit shut out of the Patriots.
In the second game the Cats defeated Culpeper, Virginia by a score of 1 – 0 to advance to the championship round of the tournament. Michael Ferrara, in his first varsity at bat, drove home David Mueller, who had singled, with the only run of the game in the second inning. Tye Malone went two for two and collected a walk while Erik Johnson doubled in his first varsity at bat. David Mueller went the distance on the mound striking out 8 Blue Devils while giving up only 4 hits.
The Bolles School from Jacksonville, Florida had played 15 games already and was in mid-season form when the Cats showed up to play in the third game. After a slow start the Bulldogs managed to put 5 runs on the board in the fourth inning to take a commanding 6 – 0 lead. The Cats battled back however, but came up short as the game ended with the final score 6 – 3. Ben Turner, John Bergman, and Justin Weststeyn each had an RBI for the Cats.
In the last game of the tournament against Pomona, Colorado the Cats rallied from a 5 – 1 deficit to down the Panthers 9 – 7. Jacob Turner and Justin Weststeyn each blasted a home run while David Mueller went 4 for 5 with a single, two doubles, and a triple. Justin Weststeyn picked up the win in relief while Ben Turner, pitching for the first time since his freshman year, set the Panthers down one, two, three in the bottom of the 7th for the save.
