Come From Behind Finish For Cats
The JV Wildcats got on track against St. Mary’s Monday evening with a 21-13 victory. Trailing 13-0 going into the fourth quarter, the Cats ramped up their defensive intensity and offensive execution. After a David Rohlfing punt backed up St. Mary’s inside their 20 yard line at the beginning of the fourth period, the defense pushed St. Mary’s back to its own five yard line off a bull rush by JD Hartwig and Max Piazza. As St. Mary’s was forced to punt, Drew Waeckerle returned the ball inside the opponents’ 30 yard line. Shortly thereafter, Westminster rushed in for its first TD. The initial score proved to create a snowball effect, as the young Cats scored two more touchdowns in less than 5 minutes – one on a long touchdown pass from Nathan Smallwood to Steven Fitzgerald, and the other off a long Drew Waeckerle run. The Wildcat defense then stood strong, preventing St. Mary’s from scoring when Alec Mitchell knocked down a fourth down pass inside the Cats own 10 yard line. Everyone on the JV team contributed to an excellent team victory! The JV returns home this coming Monday against Borgia.
Improving Cats Come Up Short
Miscues and missed opportunities resulted in the JV Wildcats falling to the Lutheran North Crusaders 18-0 at home on Tuesday. The Cats opened the game with an 8 minute drive that resulted in a missed field goal. Later, the young Westminster squad drove the ball down the field, only to have an intercepted pass returned 94 yards for a touchdown. Undaunted, the Wildcats clawed and fought throughout the game, but they never could punch the ball in the end zone. The last score for the Crusaders came with under 3 minutes left, as the defense came on “all-out” blitzes in hopes of creating a turnover. While disappointed not to garner their first victory of the year, the JV squad showed marked improvement from week one to week two. They now look to get on track against St. Mary’s on the road this coming Monday.
