Wildcats Still Winning.......
If you were a Wildcat fan tonight, you had to leave the North County rink with a smile on your face and pride in your gut about the WCA varsity hockey team. Why? Because even though they were missing nearly half their defensemen and even though they were down 5 - 2 at the end of the second period, they didn't give up.....and they pulled off the win. It didn't take defenseman Tim Appelbaum long to discover why Pattonville's # 38 Kaariainen is the #1 scorer in the 43-team league, and Appelbaum did something about it. Basically shut the guy down. He was all over the Finnish hockey star the whole game. Defensemen Hughes and O'Brien took care of everyone else. That's not to say that goaltender Taylor Smallwood didn't do his part to shut down #38, too. Smallwood faced this intimidator 1-on-1 TWICE in the game and came out smiling with puck in hand. In addition to those two saves, he racked up 33 more in tonight's game. Fantastic! Nice job, you guys! To compliment their defensive prowess, the Cats laid on the offensive moves as well. Apparently Jimmy Munson and Daniel Kaufman decided to pour on the steam tonight, and they wowed us with their moves. Munson racked up 5 big goals and an assist while Kaufman nailed a hat trick. Highlights: 4 goals in 6 minutes in the 3rd - two of them were back-to-back short-handed goals. The first was by Munson, a blast from the red circle to top shelf glove side. The goalie had no idea the puck went in. The second was by Kaufman which was spectacular because he made the shot on his way down as he was being tackled as in football. Everyone was in awe......at both the audacity of the tackle AND the shot! With 5 1/2 minutes left on the clock, the score was 7 - 6, Wildcats. Pattonville was pulling out all stops trying to tie up the game, but Munson sealed the win at 1:17 when he picked the puck away from an unsuspecting defenseman just behind the Wildcat blue line and skated into Pattonville-land unopposed for the kill.......with a stylish deek and a backhand. Final score: 8 - 6, Wildcats. Other assists tonight: Burgess, Longworth, Franz. Wildcat shots: 24.
