#6 Cats Upset #1 Skatesmen!
What an upset! The 6th-ranked Cats walked away from tonight's game (Jan. 14th) with a victory over the Central District's number one team! And it was a solid win of the satisfying sort. The Webster Skatesmen got a hint of what was to come when Jimmy Munson scored just 14 seconds into the game on a snappy rebound from Bill Franz's shot. The Cats didn't let up from that point on. The Wildcat defense worked diligently to push the Skatesmen wide to keep their shots from being accurate. Goalie Taylor Smallwood was a big man in net tonight, using all his resources - glove, blocker, stick, pads, skates (and that brain!) - to keep the puck out of the Wildcat net. He used razor-sharp judgement, even coming out of his net to mid-zone to race an advancing Webster forward to the puck. Smallwood won the race and sent the puck into the neutral zone. Munson managed the impossible goal to close out the first period. He appeared to be nearly behind the Webster net when he shot. Best I can tell, he bounced the puck off the back side of the goaltender's pad. Regardless of how it happened, it put the Cats in a strong position, up by 2 with a period down. The second period held two goals for each team. John Burgess scored on a rebound. Then Munson rounded out his hat trick with a hard shot from the red circle that ended in that satisfying klink sound as it made contact with the under side of the cross bar and headed straight down. Webster's second goal was nearly a give-away, as the Cats had 2 men in the penalty box when it was scored. The Cats were finished scoring at this point. The Skatesmen managed a third goal late in the third, which put them within one goal of the Wildcats. They were hungry for the win and pulled their goaltender with 1:30 left to play. Shoot as they might, they could not get the biscuit past Smallwood and the Wildcat defense. With .9 seconds on the clock, Smallwood made the glove save of the game as he was pummelled by 6 Webster players who desperately did NOT want to lose! Desperation did not pay off in this case.......the clock ended the game and the score was still 4 - 3, Wildcats. Yeah! Assists tonight: Franz - 2, Munson - 1. Wildcat shots: 21. Saves: FORTY-TWO!!!!
