Cats Win the Warrior Face-Off

Tonight’s game (Jan. 11th) against the Whitfield Warriors was a totally different game of stick & puck compared to the previous match-up between the 2 teams (Dec. 10th), which ended in a tie. The first four minutes of this game were a Wildcat whirlwind, which inspired the Warrior coach to pull goalie # 39 off the ice in a hurry. Four minutes, 3 Wildcat goals. At a mere 20 seconds into the game, Jimmy Munson came up with the puck mid-ice and skated to the Whitfield net unopposed for goal #1. A minute and a half later, Vince Cascella picked the puck away from a fighting Warrior at the right Whitfield red circle. Cascella then whirled around and fired a beauty to the opposite corner high for #2. Goal number 3 came when Mr. Whitfield Defenseman attempted to clear the puck, but it hit an advancing Daniel Kaufman on its way out instead. Kaufman just kept on advancing, now with puck in tow, and he neatly back-handed the puck in stick-side. The Warriors were hoping to turn the tide around by giving their exasperated goaltender a break, so a replacement strode in at this point. This strategy looked somewhat promising until 6 minutes later when Daniel Kim took a shot from the blue line and Kaufman deflected the puck in for goal number four. The first period ended 4 – 0, Wildcats. The Warriors managed their single score in the 2nd. It was a squeaker. Next came every goaltender’s nightmare………..worse than the sight of a confident Jimmy Munson charging his net. This time, the goaltender managed to pick off Munson’s shot and cradle it in his blocker - for a moment, after which the goalie spun towards his net and inadvertently threw the puck in, eliciting a collective groan from both teams. With the wind removed from their sails, the Warriors played the game to the end as best they could, but not without allowing one more Wildcat score. It was a crowd-pleaser with Kaufman and Franz advancing the net together, passing the puck back and forth. Kaufman made the shot through the 5-hole, making the final score 6 – 1, Wildcats. Nice game, Cats! Additional assists tonight - Appelbaum & Munson. Wildcat shots - 32. Saves - 30
