Cats Continue to Please the Crowd

The Varsity hockey team continued their impressive start of the new season with a one-sided 7-2 win against Mehlville on Friday night (Nov. 16th). The large Westminster crowd, which included former fan favorites Kyle Bateman and Shawn Oberle, were inspired early with some fierce hitting leveled on Mehlville players by defenseman Tim Applebaum. Daniel Kim's laser beam shot was deflected by Bill Franz for the Wildcats' first goal just 5 minutes into the game. Senior Jimmy Munson also scored a pair of first period goals. On his first goal, Munson stole the puck in Mehlville's defensive zone and by the time the goalie realized Jimmy had the puck, it was behind him. His second goal was classic Munson, weaving through a sea of defenders before beating the goalie. Bill Franz got the 2nd period scoring started off converting on a pass from Daniel Kaufman to give Westminster a commanding 4-0 lead. Jimmy Munson completed yet another hat trick about 6 minutes into the 2nd period. After stealing the puck at center ice, Munson brought the Westminster crowd to their feet by ripping a back hand over the goalie's shoulder. Daniel Kaufman added two third period goals to cap yet another Wildcat explosive night of offense which saw them register 47 shots on goal. Kim and Kaufman collected 2 assists each while Applebaum, Munson, Vinnie Cascella and John Burgess added one assist each. Goalie Taylor Smallwood turned aside 15 Mehlville shots to earn the victory.
