0708 Hockey Season is Over.....
Tonight's (Feb. 8th) rematch with the very accomplished St. Charles West team would have made any Wildcat's heart proud. Faced with a mountain to climb after losing last night's first game of two (Score: 6 - 2) in this first round of Wickenheiser Cup playoffs, the hockey Cats grabbed their ropes and pickaxes and went at it with raw determination. There was an energy tonight that was missing the night before. The Warriors were unable to move the puck without major Wildcat resistance. Observers could tell from the beginning that this game would NOT end like the first one had. Andrew Everett managed to break the stalemate early in the first period when he stuffed a rebound in on a recovering goaltender. The WCA crowd was hopping over a Wildcat lead. The teams continued the momentum back and forth across the ice. Neither side was able to plow through the other for a score until early in the 2nd when Daniel Kaufman charged the net in a short-handed situation and delivered the puck over the goalie's shoulder stick-side to establish the Wildcat presence in this game! "We're all the way here this time, Warriors!!" It looked like SCW just might suffer a shut-out until early in the third they managed a respectable score that would have been hard to stop. However, the Cats kept them at bay for the duration and they were unable to repeat the maneuver even after they pulled their goaltender with 30 seconds left on the clock. The game ended with a 2 - 1 win for the Wildcats, who had definitely "made the summit" after losing the night before 6 - 2. The Wildcat win propelled the two teams into a 10-minute sudden-death overtime to determine which team would move on to round 2 in the Wickenheiser. Hopes were high for the Cats as the puck dropped. They'd come this far and were looking to walk away with the win. The puck switched hands a time or two. The Cats managed a couple of shots to no avail. Then the unbelievable moment happened - The Warrior's captain, Rodney O'Neal, took a shot from the red circle........and nailed it. It was truly a pity, for clearly the Cats had plenty of fight left and were robbed of the chance to use it. Goaltender Taylor Smallwood played an excellent game tonight, making 26 big saves. WCA shots: 24. Assists: Munson - 2, Cascella - 1.
Season Closer a Winner
The last game of the regular season (Feb. 2nd vs. the Ladue Rams) kept the scoreboard movin'........ Jimmy Munson was back on track tonight after being shut-out in last night's game.......five goals and two assists back on track! All were accomplished with Munson's trademark skill and style that we've come to expect and respect. He scored the first and last goals of the game and 3 in the middle. In addition to Munson's scores, Daniel Kim added 2 goals and 4 assists. Thanks to the return of defenseman Nathan Smallwood, Kim was able to move from his usual defensive position up to center ice tonight to cover for the missing Daniel Kaufman. Both shots for Kim's goals tonight were hard and fast. The first came from so short a distance that the goalie couldn't even react before the puck was wrapped in the net. The second came from further away and the goalie managed to snag it with his glove, but momentum won out and the he dropped the puck and let it trickle in. Vince Cascella was fed several nice passes in front of the net tonight. He managed to nail two of them for goals, one from Kim and one from Munson. The one from Munson was memorable because while the Cats were on a penalty kill, the ref raised his arm to signify that the Rams were going to receive a penalty as soon as they touched the puck. So the Cats pulled their goalie, added another skater, and played keep-away until they could set up for the score, which Munson and Cascella pulled off so well. Congratulations belong to Drew Moisson tonight for scoring his first goal of the season! Recently moved up to the forward line from his defensive position, Moisson made good by picking up a rebound and shooting it right in behind the goalie to the far corner. Congratulations, Drew! Not to be overlooked was Andrew Everett's goal. There was no stopping him as he skated the puck from our own blue line, through the neutral zone, down into the Rams' abode and without hesitation shot the thing up and in stick-side. Final score: 11 - 2, Wildcats. Additional assists tonight: Appelbaum - 2, Lillenberg, Longworth & Nathan Smallwood - 1 each. Wildcat shots: 36. Saves by Smallwood: 10. Watch the web site during Spirit Week to find out our play-off schedule! See you there!
Wildcats Still Winning.......
If you were a Wildcat fan tonight, you had to leave the North County rink with a smile on your face and pride in your gut about the WCA varsity hockey team. Why? Because even though they were missing nearly half their defensemen and even though they were down 5 - 2 at the end of the second period, they didn't give up.....and they pulled off the win. It didn't take defenseman Tim Appelbaum long to discover why Pattonville's # 38 Kaariainen is the #1 scorer in the 43-team league, and Appelbaum did something about it. Basically shut the guy down. He was all over the Finnish hockey star the whole game. Defensemen Hughes and O'Brien took care of everyone else. That's not to say that goaltender Taylor Smallwood didn't do his part to shut down #38, too. Smallwood faced this intimidator 1-on-1 TWICE in the game and came out smiling with puck in hand. In addition to those two saves, he racked up 33 more in tonight's game. Fantastic! Nice job, you guys! To compliment their defensive prowess, the Cats laid on the offensive moves as well. Apparently Jimmy Munson and Daniel Kaufman decided to pour on the steam tonight, and they wowed us with their moves. Munson racked up 5 big goals and an assist while Kaufman nailed a hat trick. Highlights: 4 goals in 6 minutes in the 3rd - two of them were back-to-back short-handed goals. The first was by Munson, a blast from the red circle to top shelf glove side. The goalie had no idea the puck went in. The second was by Kaufman which was spectacular because he made the shot on his way down as he was being tackled as in football. Everyone was in awe......at both the audacity of the tackle AND the shot! With 5 1/2 minutes left on the clock, the score was 7 - 6, Wildcats. Pattonville was pulling out all stops trying to tie up the game, but Munson sealed the win at 1:17 when he picked the puck away from an unsuspecting defenseman just behind the Wildcat blue line and skated into Pattonville-land unopposed for the kill.......with a stylish deek and a backhand. Final score: 8 - 6, Wildcats. Other assists tonight: Burgess, Longworth, Franz. Wildcat shots: 24.
Varsity Hockey Winning Streak at 5
The Varsity Hockey team extended their winning streak to five games with an impressive 7-1 rout of the Clayton Greyhounds Friday night (Jan 25) in Chesterfield. Things started off shaky for the Cats when Clayton took a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the game. However this would prove to be Clayton’s only goal. Later in the 1st period while playing a man short Jimmy Munson and Daniel Kaufman broke in to the Greyhound zone on a 2-1. The lone defender let Jimmy skate in alone while he tried to cover Daniel, bad move, game tied at 1. Early in the 2nd period Jimmy won a face off in the Clayton zone skated towards the net for a few strides before ripping one over the goalies shoulder for a 2-1 lead. Daniel Kim put home a rebound after 2 big saves to give Westminster a 3-1 lead. As the home crowd grew in size and noise the Cats continued their relentless attack on Clayton. Daniel Kaufman fed a beautiful pass to freshman Matt Longworth who quickly put the puck in the back of the net for a 4-1 lead. Daniel Kim capped off the 2nd period scoring with a blast that the goalie at first stopped but the momentum of the puck kept it going for a 5-1 lead. The rout continued in the third with goals from Jimmy Munson and Daniel Kaufman. The Wildcat defense was solid only allowing 18 shots against winning goalkeeper Taylor Smallwood. Tim Applebaum and Vinny Cascella picked up two assists and Jimmy Munson, Daniel Kaufman, Andrew Everett and goalie Taylor Smallwood chipped in with one assist each. Next up for the red hot Wildcats is Pattonville at 7PM in North County on Saturday the 26th.
#6 Cats Upset #1 Skatesmen!
What an upset! The 6th-ranked Cats walked away from tonight's game (Jan. 14th) with a victory over the Central District's number one team! And it was a solid win of the satisfying sort. The Webster Skatesmen got a hint of what was to come when Jimmy Munson scored just 14 seconds into the game on a snappy rebound from Bill Franz's shot. The Cats didn't let up from that point on. The Wildcat defense worked diligently to push the Skatesmen wide to keep their shots from being accurate. Goalie Taylor Smallwood was a big man in net tonight, using all his resources - glove, blocker, stick, pads, skates (and that brain!) - to keep the puck out of the Wildcat net. He used razor-sharp judgement, even coming out of his net to mid-zone to race an advancing Webster forward to the puck. Smallwood won the race and sent the puck into the neutral zone. Munson managed the impossible goal to close out the first period. He appeared to be nearly behind the Webster net when he shot. Best I can tell, he bounced the puck off the back side of the goaltender's pad. Regardless of how it happened, it put the Cats in a strong position, up by 2 with a period down. The second period held two goals for each team. John Burgess scored on a rebound. Then Munson rounded out his hat trick with a hard shot from the red circle that ended in that satisfying klink sound as it made contact with the under side of the cross bar and headed straight down. Webster's second goal was nearly a give-away, as the Cats had 2 men in the penalty box when it was scored. The Cats were finished scoring at this point. The Skatesmen managed a third goal late in the third, which put them within one goal of the Wildcats. They were hungry for the win and pulled their goaltender with 1:30 left to play. Shoot as they might, they could not get the biscuit past Smallwood and the Wildcat defense. With .9 seconds on the clock, Smallwood made the glove save of the game as he was pummelled by 6 Webster players who desperately did NOT want to lose! Desperation did not pay off in this case.......the clock ended the game and the score was still 4 - 3, Wildcats. Yeah! Assists tonight: Franz - 2, Munson - 1. Wildcat shots: 21. Saves: FORTY-TWO!!!!
Cats Win the Warrior Face-Off
Tonight’s game (Jan. 11th) against the Whitfield Warriors was a totally different game of stick & puck compared to the previous match-up between the 2 teams (Dec. 10th), which ended in a tie. The first four minutes of this game were a Wildcat whirlwind, which inspired the Warrior coach to pull goalie # 39 off the ice in a hurry. Four minutes, 3 Wildcat goals. At a mere 20 seconds into the game, Jimmy Munson came up with the puck mid-ice and skated to the Whitfield net unopposed for goal #1. A minute and a half later, Vince Cascella picked the puck away from a fighting Warrior at the right Whitfield red circle. Cascella then whirled around and fired a beauty to the opposite corner high for #2. Goal number 3 came when Mr. Whitfield Defenseman attempted to clear the puck, but it hit an advancing Daniel Kaufman on its way out instead. Kaufman just kept on advancing, now with puck in tow, and he neatly back-handed the puck in stick-side. The Warriors were hoping to turn the tide around by giving their exasperated goaltender a break, so a replacement strode in at this point. This strategy looked somewhat promising until 6 minutes later when Daniel Kim took a shot from the blue line and Kaufman deflected the puck in for goal number four. The first period ended 4 – 0, Wildcats. The Warriors managed their single score in the 2nd. It was a squeaker. Next came every goaltender’s nightmare………..worse than the sight of a confident Jimmy Munson charging his net. This time, the goaltender managed to pick off Munson’s shot and cradle it in his blocker - for a moment, after which the goalie spun towards his net and inadvertently threw the puck in, eliciting a collective groan from both teams. With the wind removed from their sails, the Warriors played the game to the end as best they could, but not without allowing one more Wildcat score. It was a crowd-pleaser with Kaufman and Franz advancing the net together, passing the puck back and forth. Kaufman made the shot through the 5-hole, making the final score 6 – 1, Wildcats. Nice game, Cats! Additional assists tonight - Appelbaum & Munson. Wildcat shots - 32. Saves - 30
Rams Too Much for Cats
Tonight’s game (Jan. 5th) against the MICDS Rams was a tough one to swallow after last night’s easy win over Lutheran South. The Rams were truly on top of their game tonight, while the Wildcats were fair-to-middling at best. From the moment that black biscuit hit the ice, the Rams were in control. They fired shot after shot. Goalie Taylor Smallwood was scrambling. The first Rams goal was scored after just one minute………the puck had never left the Wildcat zone. Three more MICDS scores followed before the buzzer mercifully rang and the Wildcats had a chance to get their thoughts in line. The Cats came off the bench to start the 2nd with a new resolve. Munson first followed thru with a score early on. Bill Franz followed shortly with a breakaway, 1-on-1 with the goalie. He scored a neat top-shelf-glove-sider. Munson came thru again with a slap-shot from the red circle. The puck produced that satisfying billowing of the net as it struck high in the corner. NOW the Rams were getting worried. They’d taken their breather and were back in business. They scored next, but the Wildcat back-breaker came when the Rams scored 3 more goals in 2 minutes at the end of the 2nd - beginning of the 3rd, two on the power play! Unable to rally, the Cats managed 1 more goal amidst the Rams’ barrage. Kaufman managed a rebound shot on the power play. Final score tonight - 10 – 4, Rams. Assists tonight: 1 each for Kim, Seth Lillenberg, Munson & O'Brien. Despite the high score, goalie Taylor Smallwood had a respectable game with 31 saves. Wildcat shots - 28.
Lancers No Match for Cats
Tonight’s game (Jan. 4th) against the Lutheran South Lancers was clearly dominated by the Wildcats. Apparently the holiday break was good medicine for the Cats, as they came out roaring tonight. Jimmy Munson started the scoring early on with a nice top-shelf. Seth Lillenberg was next to score with a classic “pickin’ up the trash” when the goalie was down after Daniel Kaufman had already fired twice. Thirty seconds later, Kaufman avoided the drama of a penalty shot by simply scoring top shelf as he was falling down while he was at the same time nearly performing the Chinese splits as he was being hooked thru the legs from behind. The kid’s got some focus and skill……and NO fear! Nathan Smallwood ended the first period scoring with a carry from one end of the ice to the other. He stopped to take the shot, which hit the defenseman’s stick blade, but went in anyway. The second period proved to be pretty “event-less”. The Lancers managed one score, but that was it. The Cats were saving their energy for the third, where they showed everyone what they were made of. A minute into the period, Munson & Franz teamed up for the score - Munson made the pass across the front of the net and Franz one-timed it in with flair. Munson followed shortly by managing an incredible wrist shot to mid-net when he was surrounded by defenders. Bill Franz really showed his stuff on the next score. He made one of those impossible angle shots from beside the net stick side. The shot went up BEHIND the goalie and barely caught the edge of the net glove side. Franz was on top of his game tonight, much to the Lancers’ chagrin, I’m sure. The last goal of the game was a Munson classic complete with weaving and spinning from one end of the ice to the other, ending in just the perfect shot. Rack up a hat-trick for Munson. Final score - 8 – 2, Wildcats. Assists tonight: Munson, Kaufman, & Burgess - 2 each. 1 each for Hughes, Franz, Kim, O'Brien, and both Smallwoods. WCA shots - 34, Saves - 27 Nice game, Cats!!!
Out with the Old and In with the New (Again!)
The fourth annual Westminster Alumni vs. Varsity hockey game took place this past Thursday, January 3rd, and though there were some fresh faces on both benches, the result was nothing new. As the puck dropped, the alumni came out firing. Hoping for an early lead, they laced shot after shot toward varsity goaltender Taylor Smallwood, but couldn't seem to find the back of the net. Around midway through the first, the varsity made the mistake of putting seven men on the ice, which resulted in an alumni penalty shot. Smallwood came up huge for the varsity and kept the game in a scoreless tie. Finally with 3:40 left in the first, Joe Nelson notched the first and only alumni goal on assist by Zac Underwood and Andrew Bateman. Down but not out, the varsity were handed their first penalty shot of the game, which resulted in Jimmy Munson getting jiggy with a slick little move to somehow sneak the puck around the pad of alumni goaltender Nate (nice 'stache) Brown with just 29 seconds left in the period. From the moment the puck slid over the goal line, the varsity refused to look back.

Join us for the fun!!
Tie Tie Again......
Tying seems to be the Wildcat hockey trend of the week. Tying tonight’s game (Dec. 10th) was the result of an INCREDIBLE Wildcat effort. Facing an impressive lineup of Whitfield skating talent, the Cats did a remarkable job of keeping the Warrior scoring efforts at bay. The Wildcat defense was surely vexing to the Warriors…….Appelbaum was hitting hard, Nathan Smallwood was pushing advancing forwards wide and into the boards. Hughes was a wall on the Whitfield blue line and wouldn't let any puck or any Warrior get past him. O'Brien was breaking up plays. Lots of effort was going into poke checking the puck away and intercepting passes. Never was a Whitfield man left unattended in front of the Wildcat net. Nice job, Wildcat defenders! In addition, goaltender Taylor Smallwood was yet again on top of his game. Fielding 28 shots during the game, he skillfully saved all but 2. Daniel Kaufman was the lone scoring Wildcat tonight. His first goal was actually one of those well-orchestrated events that brings great satisfaction to the on-lookers. Kaufman and Kim were charging the Warrior net, Kim down the boards with the puck, and Kaufman down the middle. At the perfect moment, Kim fired the puck directly to the storming Kaufman, who one-timed it on the fly with precision. The goalie must have been stunned. I certainly was. Kaufman’s 2nd goal came in the third. Everyone was in the neutral zone and a Warrior defenseman on his own blue line had the puck and was getting ready to pass it on up. Kaufman stole the puck from that unsuspecting fella and headed back towards the Whitfield net totally unopposed. He neatly deeked the goaltender and shot the puck in glove side. Final score tonight: 2 – 2. Kim & Cascella worked to assist Kaufman’s first goal. WCA shots: 21. Whitfield shots: 28
Skatesmen & Cats Even Up
Unflappable was the name of the game tonight (Dec. 8th) and goaltender Taylor Smallwood earned the game its name. Tonight, he proved that he’s the guy you want fighting in the trenches with you. He faced a relentless Webster puck-pummelling without fear. He was alert, keen, on his toes, ready for anything. He faced the first Skatesmen shot only 8 seconds after the game-opening puck was dropped. No problem……Taylor was on the ready. In the first period alone, he fended off 12 solid shots on goal. If Smallwood was the fearless tiger, teammate Daniel Kim was the sly fox early in the first period; while the Skatesmen were busily firing on Smallwood, Kim snuck out and behind the Webster defensemen ever so cunningly. All alone, he was in the neutral zone when Tim Appelbaum passed him the puck. With no one to interfere, Kim skated straight to the Skatesmen net and shot it up and over the shoulder of the goalie. Sneaky. In the second period, Smallwood continued to get pummeled - 18 shots in all compared to the Wildcats’ 7. However, between Smallwood’s skill at deflecting and his teammates’ skill at shooting, the Cats came out ahead 3 – 1 when the 2nd period buzzer buzzed. Jimmy Munson had wowed the crowd when in the spotlight he took supreme advantage of a penalty shot & flung the puck cleanly over the goalie’s right shoulder. Daniel Kim had scored his second goal of the evening after he came out of the penalty box and into the empty Skatesman zone. He picked up a dumped puck & shot it along the ice on one of those incredibly angled paths that goes right under the goalie’s nose and barely catches the far corner of the net. Nice. SOOOOOO the Cats were ahead 3 – 1 when the third period began, but did they ever have to FIGHT to keep the game from being a loss. Webster shot a determined 14 in the third. The Cats shot 2. Smallwood managed to fend off 12 of the barrage, but two made it in and the Wildcats were fortunate to walk away with the 3-3 tie. The Cats were short two of their forward firepower tonight (Kaufman & Everett) and it showed. Jake O’Brien assisted Kim’s 2nd goal. WCA shots: 17. Webster shots: 44.
Fighting Greyhounds Beat Cats
Tonight's game (Nov. 30th) was a difficult one to lose. The Cats clearly carried the momentum in the first period, firing an incredible 15 shots on goal compared to Clayton's 7! Unfortunately, the on-fire Greyhound goalie managed to keep all 15 Wildcat shots at bay. Thereafter, the Westminster energy fizzled ever so slowly like a balloon with a slow leak. Clayton finally managed a goal with 30 seconds left in period 2. Daniel Kaufman followed shortly after with a respectable effort in front of the Clayton net. An unsuspecting greyhound defenseman was ready to clear the puck from the zone when Kaufman picked it away, only to have it picked right back by another Clayton player. You guessed it - Kaufman managed to steal it again within moments and somehow deek the goalie to shoot it up and in, ka-ching! Kaufman's effort -nice as it was- was not enough to nudge the Cats from their slump. From that point on, the Greyhounds bucked up and controlled the game. They ended up with another goal plus a lucky score on the Wildcats' open net with 48 seconds left in the game. Nathan Smallwood assisted Kaufman's goal. His brother, Taylor, had an incredible night with 27 saves. Final score: 1 - 3, Greyhounds.
Lancers Can't Compete with Cats Tonight
The Cats knew from the start tonight (Nov. 26th) that the Lutheran South Lancers should be an easy team to beat. Therefore, it stung when the Lancers were the first to score nearly an entire period into the game! The Wildcats apparently needed that sting to get their jets going. The Lancers were playing a highly defensive game in an attempt to shut down heavy-duty scorers Jim Munson and Daniel Kaufman, but Kaufman blew by the defense and had no one but the goalie to answer to when he put in WCA goal number one to get the Wildcat engine rumbling. The next goal came in the middle of the 2nd on a WCA power play. Daniel Kim made the D-to-D pass to freshman Nathan Smallwood, who nailed the top left corner of the net with a nice wrist shot from just inside the blue line. No shutting off the Wildcat engine now! Daniel Kim scored next from the blue line. The puck slid into the right corner of the net and made a sweet trip around the bottom of the rail to the left corner. A real ringer. Kim was hot tonight, neatly scoring the next goal from a Daniel Kaufman pass in front of the net. Kaufman racked up a hat trick with the Wildcat game-opener, a nice back-handed goal, and a nice deeker. He also assisted Kim's two goals. Bill Franz and Seth Lillenberg each contributed an assist to the score sheet. Goaltender Taylor Smallwood stopped 19. Nice! Final score: 6 - 1, Wildcats.
Cats Send Bombers Home with No Goals
WEll, I took notes on every WCA goal that was scored tonight and for the most part, the notes all looked pretty much the same - "Jim Munson skated the puck from one end of the ice to the other dodging the defense right and left. He was moving so fast, spinning and deeking that the goalie couldn't move fast enough when the time came to save the shot." The first one went under the goalie as he was diving. The second went over the top of his leg pad. The third, Munson tapped in after the goalie had saved his first shot and was down. Didn't help the Bomber esteem that two of these first 3 goals were made when the Cats were short-handed. The 4th was made by Bill Franz as he and Munson charged the net together. Munson made a last-minute pass to Franz who neatly one-timed it right to the upper corner. AND number five Munson flipped top shelf. The goalie was so mesmerized, he didn't even move to make the save. Hat trick plus one and an assist for Munson. A goal for Franz. An assist for freshman, Stephen Lillenberg, his first point of the season. Taylor Smallwood was rock solid in goal and walked away with his first shut-out of the season. Final score: 5 - 0, Wildcats. Congratulations, Cats!!!
Cats Continue to Please the Crowd
The Varsity hockey team continued their impressive start of the new season with a one-sided 7-2 win against Mehlville on Friday night (Nov. 16th). The large Westminster crowd, which included former fan favorites Kyle Bateman and Shawn Oberle, were inspired early with some fierce hitting leveled on Mehlville players by defenseman Tim Applebaum. Daniel Kim's laser beam shot was deflected by Bill Franz for the Wildcats' first goal just 5 minutes into the game. Senior Jimmy Munson also scored a pair of first period goals. On his first goal, Munson stole the puck in Mehlville's defensive zone and by the time the goalie realized Jimmy had the puck, it was behind him. His second goal was classic Munson, weaving through a sea of defenders before beating the goalie. Bill Franz got the 2nd period scoring started off converting on a pass from Daniel Kaufman to give Westminster a commanding 4-0 lead. Jimmy Munson completed yet another hat trick about 6 minutes into the 2nd period. After stealing the puck at center ice, Munson brought the Westminster crowd to their feet by ripping a back hand over the goalie's shoulder. Daniel Kaufman added two third period goals to cap yet another Wildcat explosive night of offense which saw them register 47 shots on goal. Kim and Kaufman collected 2 assists each while Applebaum, Munson, Vinnie Cascella and John Burgess added one assist each. Goalie Taylor Smallwood turned aside 15 Mehlville shots to earn the victory.
Varsity Hockey Season Opener - Big Wow!
Out-numbered, out-sized, and out-skilled, the Northwest Lions had to settle for playing in the Wildcats' dust in tonight's (Nov. 9th) season opener. The 11-2 end result came from some stellar performances - especially from WCA's Daniel Kaufman and Jim Munson. Kaufman fielded 4 goals and 2 assists, while Munson added 4 goals. Also making the scoreboard were Daniel Kim with 1 goal, 2 assists, and Vince Cascella with 1 each, goal and assist. Seth Lillenberg added the final score, and Andrew Everett, Bill Franz and freshman Stephen Lillenberg had one assist each. Taylor Smallwood and Jacob Appelbaum shared the net and managed to keep focused when it mattered even though they didn't field an abundance of shots. If this game was a preview of the season to come, you won't want to miss a single game! Come on out and watch our next game this Friday, Nov. 16th, 9:45 PM at Affton versus Mehlville.
