Wildcats Persevere Despite Injuries

This year, Westminster has the largest group of seniors to ever play varsity football. Much of the group has been together since seventh grade when they started a winning tradition; winning consistently against teams such as MICDS, Chaminade and Lutheran North. But the seniors' high hopes for a return to the state playoffs have been plagued by injuries as the team has been without quarterback and defensive end Derrick Phillips, cornerback and wide receiver Erik Lewis for most of the season. More recent losses have included slotback and linebacker Daniel Kim and linebacker, fullback and kicker Gregory Schoenberg missed two games. Saturday was an all out effort which saw Erik Lewis return after weeks of rehabilitation play a tremendous game with 5 tackles and a 35 yard touchdown pass suffer a season ending injury in the 4th quarter.

Tough Non-Conference Schedule Builds a Strong Team

It was Wildcats vs Wildcats Saturday afternoon as the 4-0 union Wildcats made the trip to Creve Coeur for the first time. Union is a strong and unique opponent known for a relentless passing attack, no huddle offense, constant use of onside kicks and almost never punting. WCA was well-prepared and turned the tables on Union early. While Union started the scoring with a 51 yard pass play after the Westminster Wildcats held them on three downs, but Union converted and scored on 4th down. They proceeded to kick off out of bounds and as Westminster took over Union showed an 8 man blitz look. Zach Dorton audibled from our own no huddle offense and hit Chris Bates on a quick slant and Chris quickly left the baffled blitzing Union defenders behind as he sprinted 65 yards to the goal line.

Cats Look to Reboud after Loss to Borgia

In their first of two Friday night games this season, the 3-0 Cats found out why Borgia was given its number 3 ranking. Things looked good at the outset when senior safety Erik Lewis picked off a pass as Borgia was threatening to score on their first drive of the game. However, Borgia instantly turned the tables by returning the favor as Westminster tried to go deep. The second quarter was one-sided with Borgia recording 4 touchdowns the last was an end zone pass from the 10 as the clock ran out on the half.

WCA Spears Lancers 49-0

Varsity was glad to get back on dry ground Saturday, on a field miraculously brought back into shape by Mark Jennings in only a week. On the opening kickoff, veteran kicker Gregory Schoenberg generously kept the kick a few yards short of the end zone and the Lancers started out at the 12. After 3 plays generating 5 yards, South had their best punt of the game starting the Wildcats at the 45 in their own territory. The Cats took one play to assess the defense and on a second and 7 from the Cat 49, Daniel Kim took it all the way just 3:11 into the game.
